A four-day festival peaking on Kartika Shukla Shashthi, six days after Diwali. Mainly observed in Bihar, Jharkhand, eastern Uttar Pradesh and Nepal.

Significance

Worship of Surya, the Sun god, and Chhathi Maiya for health and prosperity.

How it is celebrated

• Nahay Khay and Kharna rituals
• 36-hour fast without water
• Offering arghya to the setting and rising sun while standing in water
• Thekua and fruit offerings in bamboo baskets
